The Georgia State University Law Review will be hosting its 30th annual symposium on Friday, March 21, 2025. The Symposium, entitled "The Law of Shoulds," explores how legal systems transform society's moral judgments into enforceable rules. While many laws appear grounded in objective concerns including public safety, economic efficiency or harm prevention, closer examination reveals the profound influence of underlying moral principles.
The Law of Shoulds examines this dynamic across multiple domains, from taxation to the Comstock Act to international perspectives on labor market regulation. Throughout these discussions, we hope attendees will develop a better understanding of how societies codify their moral judgments into law and examine the real-world impacts on those subject to these rules.
Join us as we explore how moral principles become laws, who benefits from these transformations and how understanding the law's moral foundations might help us better shape its future.
