Spring Break Study Abroad in Brazil
Profs. Julian Juergensmeyer and Karen Johnston will be leading a spring break study abroad trip to Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba, Brazil March 16-23, 2019. This program will focus on land use planning, sustainable and equitable development, growth management and environmental law and policy. Students will begin the week in Rio de Janeiro, the second largest metropolitan area in Brazil with a population of over 12 million people. Rio de Janeiro, host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, will demonstrate to students the tension between growth and development and income inequality and social exclusion, as students learn about the cities extensive favelas. In the second half of the week, students will travel to Curitiba, one of the world’s most liveable cities, and witness their model transportation system. Curitiba is the perfect opportunity for students to learn that great urban solutions are not always expensive or complex.
