Legal Alternatives

The Career Services Office offered a program about alternative careers for people with law degrees.  The program was set up as a table talk.  There were about eight speakers, who were seated at tables, and current students could go and speak with each one.  Many of the speakers were Georgia State College Alumni.

For anyone that is interested in exploring legal alternatives, this is a wonderful opportunity.  There are very few sources to get the kind of information that these speakers gave.  Each of them gave a different view because they were from all types of jobs.  The speakers' experience ranged from the heads of departments to educational testing.  With such a wide range, it was easier to get an idea of what is needed to break into some of these fields.

The advice the speakers gave was priceless.  In fact, some of the speakers would look at the student's resume, and then make suggestions of what the student should look into by looking at the experience and interests involved.  In this area, it was obvious that these Juris Doctorates thought outside the box.  Some of the suggestions ranged from News Anchor to Kindergarten Teacher.  If this does not give an idea as to how far ranging a law degree is, nothing will.

For anyone that is the slightest bit interested in legal alternatives, go next spring.  The earlier you go and get this information, the more useful it will be.  Many of the speakers suggested courses of action and places to look for these types of jobs, which is a great help because almost none of these types of jobs are going to be listed in the newspaper or on web sites.  The Legal Alternatives program is a great opportunity, so make sure to use it.
