Student Bar Association: Keynote Address By Former Governor Barnes

On Wednesday, April 2, 2003, Former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes delivered a Keynote Address as part of the Sixth Annual Law Week Celebration at Georgia State University College of Law.  Associate Dean Steven Kaminshine introduced the former Governor's speech as an honorable tribute to the meaning of Law Week, as Mr. Barnes was someone who had devoted his life to public service.

Phi Alpha Delta: Being a Solo Practitioner

Law school creates thousands of stressors for students, and the greatest of those stressors is finding a job.  When we entered Georgia State, we were scared into thinking that if we weren't in the top 10% of the class we would never land a job with a high enough salary to cover our student loan payments.  But, as we moved on, survived RWA, finals, and realized when grades came out that some of us will never be in the top 10%, we discovered that there are several career options available.

Student Health Law Association: Presentation and Discussion on Abortion

Pat Chivers, the Director of Government Relations of Right to Life Organization visited Georgia State University on April 3, 2003 for the Student Health Lawyers Association's program for Law Week.  Originally, this program had been set up as an abortion debate, with speakers on the pro-choice side of this controversial issue as well.  However, due to a last-minute cancellation, the Pro-Choice party failed to represent that position.  Instead, students did get the opportunity to hear a professional lobbyist speak on her side of the issue, and share her views on abortion.

Jewish Law Student Association: Discussion on State Flag

The Jewish Law Students were glad to help usher in Law Week on Monday, March 31 by hosting a discussion on the Georgia Flag and charitable choice with guest speaker Chuck Taylor from the Anti-Defamation League.  The League, which has been fighting anti-Semitism, religious and ethnic discrimination, and other forms of hatred since 1913, is a nationwide, politically active group.

Public Interest Law Association: Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence

Friday, April 4th P.I.L.A. hosted an informational session with the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence.  The Women's Resource Center was created in fall of 1986, spurred by $10,000 in funding from Dekalb County.  It was started in a single room at the Equal Opportunity Services building with just one part-time advocate.
