Mailing Lists

The College of Law provides e-mail mailing lists via a program called Mailman. Mailman receives e-mail via designated e-mail addresses and handles the e-mail by forwarding and/or responding according to a set of defined rules. Some of the lists are set up to keep a publicly accessible archive of e-mails sent through them.

Lists are provided for the following purposes:

  • Class mailing lists - Each class at the college has a two-way interactive mailing list for class-related discussions. The instructor and all enrolled students are automatically subscribed using the e-mail address registered with the MyLaw ID system.
  • Auto-responders / RSVP lists - These are lists to receive e-mail from the public or other larger audience for a particular department or function. The list can automatically reply with an acknowledgement of any received e-mails, and the e-mails can be forwarded to one or more persons within the college.
  • Organizational / Special Purpose - Lists set up for various organizations, projects or events. These lists may have a set of handling rules.

Using our lists

There are a few general considerations for using our mailing lists:

  • You must send the e-mail to the list address from the e-mail account registered with the MyLaw ID system. Otherwise, the e-mail will be placed into a holding area ("moderator's queue") and will need to be "released" by the list owner.
  • Mailing list attachments are limited to 2 megabytes. All lists will allow attachments. All messages are retained in an archive that is accessible to all members of the College of Law.  While the system is physically located on the gsulaw.gsu.edu server,
  • the "@" address can be gsulaw.gsu.edu OR law.gsu.edu.

Administration of lists

For lists other than class lists, managers can add people to the subscription list via the MyLaw ID system "Manage groups assigned to me" function.

The Mailman program provides a screen showing of all the public lists on the system. You can access the Mailman administration screens for your list(s) via the Mailman gateway  This gateway will allow you to tend to moderator requests and set other list functions. Note that many functions are set by daily reload scripts, so configuration changes may need to be submitted to the help desk.
