Trial Advocacy

Trial Advocacy has several components. Our litigation program, offered each spring, teaches students the basic skills of trial work in small seminar groups, where they receive intensive writing and simulation exercises. More advanced seminar courses also are available to further enhance students' trial skills in civil and criminal areas. More »

Litigation Program

After completing the required course in Evidence in the fall semester of the second year of law study, every student must take a 3 credit course in the spring called Litigation. This course, taught in small sections of 12 students by practicing trial lawyers, introduces the students to the basic skills required in representing a client from the initial interview, through discovery and motion practice, and finally to a trial. Each student will conduct a jury trial at the Fulton County Courthouse at the end of the semester. Meet the Litigation faculty »

Lawyering: Foundations Program

The Lawyering: Foundations program at Georgia State University College of Law is a rigorous skills program staffed by full-time faculty, all of whom have had substantial experience practicing law prior to teaching. Using practice-focused assignments and exercises, students learn skills in critical reading, problem-solving, legal analysis, and effective written and oral communication.

All problem materials incorporate and provide students exposure to legal documents and instruments they likely will encounter early in their legal careers. While this class focuses heavily on teaching the necessary skill of legal writing, requiring students to draft several objective and persuasive documents in various forms including legal memoranda, briefs, contract provisions, client letters, and business emails, students also will participate in oral arguments, client/witness interviews and office meetings.

This innovative program provides Georgia State University College of Law students with a solid foundation in legal research, analysis and writing, and an understanding of actual lawyering skills, which uniquely prepares them for the demands of today's legal profession.

Externships

The Externship Program at Georgia State University College of Law operates on the premise that the potential for learning outside of the law school is tremendous. The kinds of experiences available to our students in the rich metropolitan Atlanta legal community far surpass the opportunities of even the most expansive in-house clinical programs. Students interested in acquiring experience in almost any area of expertise may do so, including banking and securities law, criminal law, employment law, civil rights law, bankruptcy, and corporate law.
