New Program Inquiries
The Externship Program is not currently accepting new externship site applications.
Requirements to Participate
In order to be considered, an organization must meet the following minimum criteria:
- The organization must be a non-profit or governmental agency. We do not place students in private corporations or law firms.
- Externs must be supervised by at least one attorney at the externship site.
- Because the externship is intended to be a learning experience rather than an employment experience, supervisors must be willing to act as mentors to externs. Often, it will require more time to mentor a student in completing a task than it would be to actually perform the task oneself.
- Supervisors must be willing to provide regular feedback to each extern about work performance and written work product.
- The vast majority of the work performed by the extern must be legal in nature. Although the position may include incidental clerical or non-legal tasks, students should primarily be engaged in legal work during their time at an externship site.
Although all agencies are duly considered, priority will be given to those placements that offer students exposure to fields of law that are not currently represented in the Externship Program.
