Applying to the 2010 Summer Academy in International Commercial ArbitrationELIGIBILITYThe program welcomes applications from law students at any United States law school approved by the American Bar Association or by the accreditation agency of the state in which it is located. Program size is limited, so participants are encouraged to apply early. Participation is contingent upon acceptance into the program. REGISTRATION AND INFORMATIONTo apply for participation in the Summer Academy in International Commercial Arbitration, the following must be received by January 15, 2010:
Upon notification of acceptance into the program, students who do not attend Georgia State Universityand who wish to be considered transient/visiting students so as to receive academic credit for the program, will be required to provide all of the following to Georgia State University (if they have not already done so): (1) A letter of good standing and permission to attend from the Registrar's Office at the current/home institution (2) A statement of residency status from the Registrar's Office of the current/home institution Please note that accepted students will be enrolled into courses offered by the Summer Academy in International Commercial Arbitration on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, because program size is limited, prospective students should apply early. No application is complete and no applicant is guaranteed participation in the program until all financial obligations, including program costs and University tuition, are met. Students will be notified of acceptance promptly after the application deadline of January 15, 2010. Orientation to the program will be provided at Georgia State University during spring semester, 2010, at a date to be announced; all students in the Atlanta, Georgia, area – whether GSU students or not – will be expected to attend this orientation. An additional mandatory orientation for all student participants will be conducted during their first weekend in Linz, Austria.
PROGRAM COSTS AND TUITION COSTS
The cost of the program (hotel, ground program, ground transportation in and around Europe, excursions, and many meals) is a low $2,990 (less than $100 a day for the experience of a lifetime). Financial Aid is available to students otherwise qualifying under guidelines from the GSU Financial Aid Office. PROGRAM COST INCLUDES:Hotel accommodations on a double occupancy basis, including breakfast each day, at the Sommer Haus Hotel in Linz, Austria, adjacent to the campus of Johannes Kepler University in that city and, in the final week of the program, at a three star beachfront hotel in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on the Adriatic coast. Single occupancy rooms at an additional charge will be available at both hotels in Summer Semester 2010
PROGRAM COST DOES NOT INCLUDE
OTHER EXPENSES:Tuition and Fees: While Tuition has not yet been formally determined for 2010 by the Georgia Board of Regents, the estimated GSU in-state tuition (available to ALL participants regardless of residence) for summer 2010 will be $3345 for the six credit hours. In addition, the University will assess a $57 Technology Fee payable by each of the students participating in the Summer Academy. Typically, a GSU student participating in the Summer Academy will therefore pay $3,595 for tuition. Under a special arrangement with the Georgia Board of Regents, students who are not residents of the State of Georgia will be permitted to enroll in the Summer Academy at in-state tuition rates, subject only to an additional administrative cost of $250. Typically, a non-GSU student participating in the Summer Academy will therefore pay $3,595 for tuition. Other personal costs An individual’s personal tastes and preferences will, of course, pretty much determine what that individual will spend for food, entertainment, and other elective expenditures during the period of the Summer Academy, making generalizations in this respect somewhat risky. Experience has shown, however, that a typical student will require something in the range of $20-25 per day for meals, transportation, and other basic personal costs while participating in the program. It is not unusual for a student participant to elect to remain at off-site program venues (Budapest, Vienna, or Venice) after the conclusion of formal activities in those cities, especially when these appear in the program schedule on a Friday which is very often the case. In that event, the student assumes the personal costs of hotel accommodations in that city and transportation expenses at the end of the weekend. Tuition and fees for all Su mmer Acad emy participants should be paid to Georgia State University through Ms Cindy Perry, Summer Academy in International Commercial Arbitration Program Assistant, Georgia State University College of Law, P.O. Box 4037, Atlanta, GA 30302-4037. Credit card payment of program costs is available. Payment of program costs are due as follows:January 15, 2010: $800, which includes a $500 nonrefundable deposit due in order to reserve your space in the program, to be credited toward the program fee February 15, 2010, the balance of the program fee and tuition in full. Georgia State University students receiving financial aid will be charged program tuition directly from their award monies. It is the responsibility of ALL students to pay the balance of all fees by the February 15, 2010 deadline. SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AIDMost institutions will allow students to apply for financial aid to help fund summer foreign study. Students should consult their home institution’s individual financial aid office to determine whether this is possible and to apply in time to secure adequate funding. In addition, some institutions offer scholarships to help fund foreign study and students should explore this possibility as well. For Georgia State University students, a number of scholarships for study abroad are available through the State of Georgia, including the International Education Fee (IEF) Study Abroad Scholarship and the Board of Regents Study Abroad Scholarship. For students in the University System of Georgia, financial aid and the HOPE scholarship may also be used to pay for study abroad tuition.
