ATLANTA – In collaboration with the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office’s Staff Development and Learning Unit and the World Health Organization-HQ, the Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution designed and conducted a series of four, one-day seminars for the general staff and supervisors of EMRO-WHO and a four-day workshop on “Mediating Workplace Conflict” for 22 staff from the Division of General Management and selected technical programs.
EMRO was the first regional office to replicate HQ’s capacity building efforts in managing conflict. The international civil servants working at EMRO’s regional office who participated in these workshops learned how to resolve their own conflict or intervene successfully in conflict between others.
Lin Inlow, CNCR’s Director of Education and Mediation, and Carolyn Benne, CNCR consultant, facilitated each of the one-day seminars. This series provided an overview of the nature of conflict in a large, complex international organization such as WHO. Instruction and discussion focused on how to analyze workplace conflict and select the appropriate intervention strategy. Emphasis was also given to negotiating for mutual gains and managing emotions during conversations when the stakes are high.
Inlow and Marilyn Hazzard Lineberger, CNCR consultant, taught a four-day workshop on “Mediating Workplace Conflict.” EMRO participants were from both the Division of General Management and selected technical programs.
Traveling to Cairo as part of the CNCR team were CNCR consultants who volunteered to serve as mediation coaches. These coaches, mostly from the USA, assisted during the mediation simulations. The coaches were Dorothy Graham, Ombuds at Kennesaw State University; Donna Douglas Williams, Ombuds, WHO-HQ; Aba Ankrah-Ntambwe, Coordinator, Policy and Administration of Justice, WHO-HQ; Betsey Neeley, formerly Assistant Vice Chancellor for Legal Counsel for the University System of Georgia; and, Wendy Garrard, Researcher, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan.
The series of one-day classes and the mediation class were both well received with the Assistant Regional Director of EMRO-WHO requesting consultation regarding next steps. EMRO leadership is now examining ways to capitalized on these capacity building efforts while maintaining the momentum generated as a result of the training.
