Study Space I: PANAMA CITY, PANAMA Program
Evaluations of Human Habitats and Habits in the 21st Century
Entering the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities of Panama’s Explosive Urban Growth
Please join us for the inaugural Study Space, in Panama City, Panama, and environs December 9-16, 2007
The Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, is a co-sponsor of this Study Space.
Study Space I will be led by Dr. Daniel Suman. Dr. Suman is an oceanographer and environmental lawyer who teaches at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Miami. Dr. Suman, a native of Panama, is a world-renowned expert on coastal law and policy, who works extensively in the Americas and the Caribbean and is a key participant in developing coastal management policy for the Republic of Panama. Dr. Suman is an active researcher on environmental and land use issues in Panama.
Entering the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities of Panama’s Explosive Urban Growth will offer its participants the opportunity to study first hand the complex social and economic pressures on the capital city and principal urban center of this country wedged between two continents and dominated by both its Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Thus, the program will look at much more than coastal law and policy – it will consider the way in which environmental and land use issues are interwoven with social and economic justice concerns. The Study Space will focus on the explosive urban growth of Panama City and the challenges and opportunities that this growth presents to the sustainability of this urban environment.
The schedule for Study Space I will require participants to observe two daily commitments: (1) attend the morning field study experience and (2) attend the evening’s study dinner. The field trips will feature speakers who live and work in the area.
COST AND TRAVEL DETAILS
The total cost for this week, which includes accommodations (seven nights total), breakfast daily, events admissions, gratuities, speaker honoraria, airport ground transportation in Panama and all ground transport while in Panama is $1,350.00 US. Airline tickets must be purchased separately.
