February 2012

Transnational Law & Contemporary Problems

Transnational Law & Contemporary Problems, in conjunction with the University of Iowa College of Law International and Comparative Law Program, is sponsoring the Trandafir Writing Competition.  The topic is “any topic of contemporary international business or economic concern with a legal nexus.”  The winning author receives a $2,000 cash prize and publication of their essay in Transnational Law & Contemporary Problems.

ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability

The ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability is sponsoring the Bert W. Levit Essay Contest.  The 2011 Contest Essay Hypothetical concerns whether a party who has engaged in fraud has standing to bring a suit against a lawyer for fraud and legal malpractice based on the lawyer’s conduct relating to the fraud itself, or rather if such a claim is barred by the doctrine of in pari delicto, which prohibits one wrongdoer from suing another wrongdoer for a fraud the two parties committed together.  The winning author will receive a $5,000 case prize and an all-expense paid trip to the Spring 2011 National Legal Malpractice Conference in Boston, MA on April 27-29.

The deadline for submission is February 18, 2011.

American Constitution Society

The American Constitution Society and the University of Pennsylvania Law School ACS Chapter are sponsoring the Constance Baker Motley National Student Writing Competition.  The topic can be on any issue promoting a progressive vision of the Constitution, law, and public policy.  Possible topics can be found at their website.  The winner will be awarded $3,000. Each of the two runners-up will receive $1,000. The top paper will also receive an offer of publication in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law.

The deadline for submission is February 17, 2012.

March 2012 

ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources

The ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, the Renewable, Alternative, and Distributed Energy Resources Committee, and the Energy and Environmental Markets and Finance Committee are sponsoring the Energy Law Student Writing Competition. The topic is "Are past legal constructions for the development of other resources effective prologues, or should alternative energy deployment (including renewables) or climate change issues be addressed through sui generis rules?"  Winning entries will be published nationwide in an ABA publication, a special combined edition newsletter of the Renewable, Alternative, and Distributed Energy Resources Committee and the Energy and Environmental Markets and Finance Committee in June of 2012.

The ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section

The ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section is sponsoring the TIPS Law Student Writing Competition.  Papers should address a current topic in a legal area covered by one of the Section’s substantive law committees.  The winning author will receive a $1,500 cash prize, and airfare and accommodations to attend the ABA Annual Meeting, and mention in The Brief, the Section’s magazine.  In addition, their essay will be considered for publication in the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Law Journal.  The second-place winner will receive $500 and honorable mention in The Brief.  The third-place winner will receive an honorable mention in The Brief.

The deadline for submission is March 5, 2012.

April 2012

ABA Criminal Justice Section

The ABA Criminal Justice Section is sponsoring the 2012 William W. Greenhalgh Student Writing Competition.  The topic is "Technology & Privacy: Implications for Criminal Law, Practice & Procedure."  Any timely and important topic relating to developments in criminal law or procedure influenced by technology and its effects on privacy interests. Such topics might include the Fourth Amendment implications of digital evidence search warrants, cell phone technology and its effect on new substantive crimes or search practices, the role or influence of social networks on substantive criminal law or investigative practices, or any other area of substantive criminal law or practice, including ethical issues, relating to developing technology and privacy.  The winning author receives a $2,000 cash prize and airfare and accommodations to attend a Section meeting at which the award will be presented.  The winning entry may be selected for publication in Criminal Justice magazine.

Environmental Law Institute 

The Environmental Law Institute along with the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources and The National Association of Environmental Law Societies is sponsoring the Seventh Annual Constitutional Environmental Law Student Writing Competition (2011-2012).  The topic should address recent developments or trends in U.S. environmental law that have a significant constitutional or “federalism” component Law. Sample topics are given on the website. The winning author will receive a $2000 cash prize, an offer of publication in the Environmental Law Reporter, and a one-year individual membership to ELI.

The deadline for submission is 5:00pm ET on April 13, 2012.

Georgia State College of Law Intellectual Property Competition

The Georgia State University College of Law will hold its first annual Intellectual Property Student Writing Competition in 2012. The GSU Law Intellectual Property Writing Competition seeks papers addressing legal issues and challenges in the intellectual property field. Individuals who are currently enrolled at an ABA accredited law school are eligible to enter. Papers may not have more than one author (no co-authorship).

June 2012

American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution

The ABA Section of Dispute Resolution is sponsoring the James B. Boskey Law Student Essay Contest on Dispute Resolution. The topic is any aspect of dispute resolution practice, theory or research.  The winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize.  The winning essay and runner-up will be posted online.

The deadline for submission is June 15, 2012.
