The ABA Criminal Justice Section is sponsoring the 2012 William W. Greenhalgh Student Writing Competition. The topic is "Technology & Privacy: Implications for Criminal Law, Practice & Procedure." Any timely and important topic relating to developments in criminal law or procedure influenced by technology and its effects on privacy interests will be accepted. Such topics might include the Fourth Amendment implications of digital evidence search warrants, cell phone technology and its effect on new substantive crimes or search practices, the role or influence of social networks on substantive criminal law or investigative practices, or any other area of substantive criminal law or practice, including ethical issues, relating to developing technology and privacy. The winning author receives a $2,000 cash prize and airfare and accommodations to attend a Section meeting at which the award will be presented. The winning entry may be selected for publication in Criminal Justice magazine.

The Georgia State University College of Law will hold its first annual Intellectual Property Student Writing Competition in 2012. The GSU Law Intellectual Property Writing Competition seeks papers addressing legal issues and challenges in the intellectual property field. Individuals who are currently enrolled at an ABA accredited law school are eligible to enter. Papers may not have more than one author (no co-authorship).

The American Bar Association Section of Labor and Employment Law and College of Labor and Employment Lawyers are sponsoring the 2011-2012 Annual Student Writing Competition. Entries may address any aspect of public or private sector labor and/or employment law relevant to the American labor and employment bar. Students are encouraged to discuss a public policy issue, practical implications of a leading case or doctrine, a statute or the need for statutory modification, or a common law doctrine. The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize of $1,500 and the essay will be published in the ABA Journal of Labor & Employment Law. Second place will receive $1,000; third place, $500.

The Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice is sponsoring the Catherine Albiston Prize for Recent Developments on Gender, Law & Justice. Entries may be submissions of research, analysis, narrative, theory, and commentary that critically examine the intersection of gender with one or more other axes of subordination, including, but not limited to, race, class, sexual orientation, and disability. Pieces may be geared toward theoretical legal philosophy or pragmatic, on-the-ground lawyering. The winning essay will be published in the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The ABA Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence is sponsoring the Ninth Annual Law Student Writing Competition. Entries must further the legal needs of victims of domestic violence or domestic violence victims and their children, or advance efforts to address the incidence, causes and effects of intimate partner violence. The winning essay will be published in the American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law.

The American Inns of Court is sponsoring the 2012 American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize. The essay should be 10,000 to 25,000 words on a topic that addresses issues of legal excellence, civility, ethics, and professionalism. The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and the essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review. The Warren E. Burger Prize will be presented as part of the 2012 American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the United States.

The American Judges Association is sponsoring their Twenty-Fourth Annual Law Student Essay Competition. Essays submitted for the 2012 competition MUST be under the topic of “Is it constitutional for a legislative body to require a DNA test for all persons arrested and charged with a felony?” The first prize for the contest is $3,000; second is $1,500; and third is $1,000. First, second, and third place winners and their law schools will be presented with an award certificate. The winning essay may be published in AJA’s journal, Court Review.

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association Educational Fund (AEF) is sponsoring the Robert T. Matsui Annual Writing Competition. The essay should be no more than 15,000 words that encourage legal scholarship on issues of importance to the Asian Pacific American legal community and topics of relevance to racial and ethnic minorities and the law. The winner of the 2012 competition will receive a monetary award of $1,500, and the winning entry will be published by the UCLA's Asian Pacific American Law Journal.

LexisNexis® is sponsoring the Thirteenth Annual James William Moore Federal Practice Award. The principal subject of the submitted paper must be federal civil practice and procedure, including the civil jurisdiction and venue rules of the federal courts. Submissions on the topics of federal courts management, federal appellate procedure, and alternative dispute resolution will also be acceptable. Papers focusing on the procedural aspects of certain types of substantive federal litigation are acceptable. The winning author will receive a cash prize of $2,000, a full set of Moore’s Federal Rules Pamphlets, and publicity of his or her name in connection with the award. The essay should address an essay on a current topic of general interest in a legal area covered by the Section. The Section is organized into industry committees and practice committees that relate to areas of legal specialty (e.g. antitrust, labor, taxation and accounting) as they apply to those industries. The Mercer University School of Law and the American Bar Association Commission on Disability Rights are sponsoring the Adam A. Milani Disability Law Writing Competition. The submission may address any aspect of disability law, theory, or practice the contestant chooses. Other permissible topics include issues arising under any of the following statutes: Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; Age Discrimination in Employment Act; Family and Medical Leave Act; or any state statutes or municipal ordinances prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. First Prize will range between $300 and $1,000, depending on whether multiple awards are given. The Theodore Tannenwald, Jr. Foundation for Excellence in Tax Scholarship, Inc. and The American College of Tax Counsel are sponsoring the 2012 Tannenwald Writing Competition. Submitted papers must focus primarily upon technical or policy-oriented tax issues relating to any type of existing or proposed U.S. federal or state tax or U.S. federal or state taxation system (including topics relating to tax practice ethical and professional responsibility matters). Cash prizes are awarded of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,500 for the top three papers. Provided that the first-prize paper has not been published, the Foundation has arranged for the publication of such paper in The Florida Tax Review.
