Research, Writing, and Advocacy
Welcome to my individual course page for the 2005-2006 academic year. Each week I will post information relevant to students in my RWA sections. RWA course information can be found at RWA On-Line Course Site.
I teach three sections: Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon, and Thursday evening -- all in Room 325A. You should attend the section in which you registered. If you are unable to attend a particular week because of illness, work, etc., you may attend one of my other sections if your schedule allows.
Spring Semester
Week of March 6, 2006
I've had to alter my office hours; I will hold office hours on Tuesday, March 7 from 3:00-6:00 and on Thursday, March 9 from 11:00-2:00.
Sixth Week Power Point Oral Argument Power Point
Week of February 27, 2006
Class will be an extended class this week; the Tuesday morning class will meet from 8:40 to 10:20, the Tuesday afternoon class will meet from 1:00-2:40, and the Thursday evening class will meet on Thursday from 6:00-7:40. This is the last "class' of the semester and we have a lot to cover. I'll discuss common problems in the brief drafts and I'll tell you all you need to know about the oral arguments.
I will hold office hours to meet with you about your brief on Tuesday, February 28 from 3:00-6:00, Thursday, February 2 from 3:00-6:00, Tuesday, March 7 from 3:00-6:00, and Thursday, March 9 from 12:00-2:00.
You may come by at other times than the posted office hours; if I'm available I'll meet with you -- I plan to be in the office most every day the weeks of February 27 and March 6.
Weeks of Feb. 13 and 20, 2006
Conferences in lieu of class. In writing your brief drafts, concentrate on writing the Argument and Headings. Ideally, you should turn in a complete brief, but if time does not permit then focus on the more substantive parts. I'll read a few pages over 20 pages of Argument, but please be judicious.
Day Student Conference Schedule; Evening Student Conference Schedule.
Week of February 6, 2006
The day students' "severe and pervasive" drafts are at the 4th floor reception desk.
For class this next week, complete the Persuasive Writing Exercise. Based on student request, I've added four best 2005 student briefs to the main RWA web site -- 2 appellant briefs and 2 appellee briefs.
I'll post Monday when and where to pick up your "severe and pervasive" drafts.
The evening class will meet at 8:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6 in Room 652.
Week of January 24, 2006
For class next week, submit in class the four page draft of your "severe and pervasive" argument section. Class will be 50 minutes and the morning class will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Week of January 16, 2006
For class next week, be prepared to discuss how you would argue the Harvey Woodley provocation issue. Based on who you represent, consider your "theory of the case" and which facts and law best support your theory.
Also, bring to class the two sample Martha Jacobson briefs distributed in the first class.
Week of January 9, 2006
I apologize for the technology glitches -- it was a security breach. I guess the lesson learned is that you should question when your computer instructs you "not to be shy." So here is the first class Power Point.
I will post my conference sign-up sheet on the 3rd floor at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2006. There will be a separate sign-up for day and evening students -- your designation as a day or evening student is based on which RWA section you are enrolled in.
