Description
(3) semester hours, one semester requirement. Placement available for one or two semesters. Prerequisite: There are no prerequisite courses beyond the first year. AVLF will train. Students work a minimum of 10 hours per week with the One Child, One Lawyer Program and will assist an AVLF staff attorney and volunteer attorneys with representing the children who are the subject of deprivation complaints filed by private individuals in the Fulton County Juvenile Court. This will involve reviewing the initial complaint, interviewing the complainant and related parties, investigating the facts of the case, assisting the staff attorney in presenting the case on behalf of the child at the initial hearing, researching any unusual legal issues presented by the case, and developing a theory of the case. After the initial hearing of the case, AVLF will refer the case to a volunteer attorney for further representation. The law student will work to assist the volunteer attorney in becoming familiar with the case and understanding the facts and issues presented by the case.
