Description
3 semester hours, one semester requirement. Second year students may apply. Preference for students who have completed a course in administrative law and/or employment law. However, the agency welcomes any and all candidates with excellent writing and analytical skills who are passionate about and committed to civil rights law. The EEOC is the lead enforcement agency in the area of workplace discrimination. The agency enforces Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Equal Pay Act and investigates charges brought by individuals against employers in this regard. The EEOC also provides oversight and coordination of all federal equal employment opportunity regulations, practices and policies. Interns may participate in any or all of the following activities: legal research and writing drafts of memoranda; reviewing and analysing cases to determine whether or not there is cause to believe that an employer engaged in unlawful discrimination; drafting requests for information; discovery plans; interrogatories and requests for production; assisting with witness and trial preparation; going on site visits with investigators; and attending court hearings and trials. Students will also have an opportunity to attend client interviews, mediations, sessions, depositions and meetings. All students who have not previously taken an externship must attend a classroom component at the law school. Consent of the Lawyer Skills Development Program faculty is required for enrollment.
