Externships: Putting Theory into Practice

Requirements to Participate

The Externship Program welcomes inquiries from community organizations interested in participating in our program.  In order to be considered, however, a program must meet the following miminum criteria:

  1. The organization must be a non-profit or governmental agency.  We do not place students in private corporations or law firms.
  2. Externs must be supervised by at least one attorney at the externship site.
  3. Because the externship is intended to be a learning experience rather than an employment experience, supervisors must be willing to act as mentors to externs.  Often, it will require more time to mentor a student in completing a task than it would be to actually perform the task oneself.
  4. Supervisors must be willing to provide regular feedback to each extern about work performance and written work product.  A more detailed explanation of supervisor expectations can be found in our Site Supervisor Handbook.
  5. The vast majority of the work performed by the extern must be legal in nature.  Although the position may include incidental clerical or non-legal tasks, students should primarily be engaged in legal work during their time at an externship site.

Agencies that meet these criteria and are interested in participating in our program should complete a New Externship Site Application and return it to Sarita James, Program Specialist, by e-mail at saritagsu.edu or by fax at (404) 413-9029.

****Thank you for your interest in participating in the Georgia State University College of Law Externship Program.  Because we are currently engaged in an administration transition we do not anticipate adding new sites to our program for the remainder of the 2009-2010 academic year.*********

The Externship faculty periodically will review new applications from community agencies as space becomes available in the Externship Program.  Although all agencies are duly considered, priority will be given to those placements that offer students exposure to fields of law that are not currently represented in the Externship Program.
