Patent Agents and Technical Advisors

Becoming a Patent Agent or Technical Advisor

  • Are you a science, engineering or technology major or graduate?
  • Are you intrigued by innovation, ideas and technology?
  • Are you creative, analytical; an effective communicator and problem solver?
  • Are you considering law school?
  • Are you familiar with the concept of intellectual property - patents, trademarks, copyrights or trade secrets?

If you answered "yes" to most of the above questions, you should consider a career as a Patent Agent or Technical Advisor!

patent agent is someone who has taken and passed the Patent Bar Exam administered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).  Patent agents are legally licensed to represent inventors in patenting their inventions, typically including electronically preparing, filing and advocating for the inventors before the USPTO.

technical advisor is a person hired by a law firm or corporation to provide technical assistance, typically in the patent field by assisting a patent attorney or patent agent in the process of securing patent rights for inventors.  Typically, a technical advisor is often a law student or in training to become a patent agent.

More and more law firms and corporations are seeking such patent agents and technical advisors in an effort to streamline the patent preparation process.  In view of international competition and other cost pressures, law firms and corporations are looking to establish efficient patent preparations processes, and patent agents and technical advisors often play an important role.
