"Ethically Impossible" STD Research in Guatemala from 1946 to 1948

11:45 am - 1 pm - Room 170

From 1946 to 1948, the United States Public Health Service, with the acquiescence and cooperation of the government of Guatemala, carried out secret studies that involved intentionally infecting citizens of Guatemala with STDs to determine the effectiveness of penicillin in treating those diseases.  When records of these studies were discovered in 2010, the President directed the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues to investigate this shocking episode.  Paul Lombardo was appointed as a Senior Advisor to the Commission and traveled to Guatemala to collect information that would eventually be incorporated in its 2011 report, entitled “Ethically Impossible.” Professor  Lombardo will discuss the origins of the Guatemala studies and the Commissions ethical conclusions.

Urban Fellows Lunch: Mike Burns, Chief, National Park Service SE Region

Noon - 1 pm - Room 201

Mike Burns, Chief of the Facility Support Division for the National Park Service Southeast Region, is currently serving on a special assignment to the EPA Region IV office.  He has been meeting with mayors from small towns throughout Georgia, Alabama and Tennesse to learn about their barriers to economic development and ability to successfully compete for federal grants.  His travels have identified numerous volunteer opportunities and federal grant opportunities.

This lunch seminar will provide Urban Fellows students and affiliated faculty with an opportunity to learn more about the possibilities to become engaged in real-world issues in Georgia.

This is a brown bag lunch - students should bring their own lunch.
