Copyrighting DNA: Protecting Synthetic DNA Sequences as a Work of Authorship
11:45 am - 1 pm - Room 170Synthetic biology, a rapidly developing area of technology, holds
the potential to begin a new era in medicine and human welfare. An
important aspect of synthetic biology is the creation of non-naturally
occurring DNA sequences. The substantial amount of creativity involved
in their creation and persistent questions regarding the patentability
of DNA invite an examination of the possibility of protecting synthetic
DNA sequences under copyright law. The panel will address the
question of the copyrightability of synthetic DNA sequences under the
Copyright Act and discuss the pros and cons of such protection.
