The Nanny State? Public Views on Legal Interventions to Fight Obesity and Chronic Disease
1 - 2 pm -Location: Room 170, Urban Life Building
Michelle M. Mello, J.D., Ph.D.
Professor of Law and Public Health
Department of Health Policy and Management

Rising levels of obesity, diabetes, and other diseases associated with so-called “lifestyle choices” have sparked interest in how the law could be used to influence health behaviors. Some legal interventions have garnered wide praise, but others have provoked vocal criticisms that they are excessive interferences by the “nanny state.”
What drives the public’s willingness to view these legal interventions as legitimate uses of government authority? This talk will provide insights into public reaction to a range of initiatives to address noncommunicable disease and what can be done to maximize public support.
This event is free and open to the public.
Co-sponsored by the CLE has been applied for from the State Bar of Georgia Commission on Continuing Lawyer Competency (cost is $5). To receive credit, please bring your Georgia Bar number and sign in at the CLE table.
