Hot Topic: Giving Blood and Sexuality?

The Student Health Law Association is excited to co-sponsor a two-day Red Cross Blood Drive, from February 8-9, in the Urban Life West Exhibit area. Promotion will kick off with a presentation by Professor Leslie Wolf - The FDA Ban on All Sexually Active Gay Blood Donors. This presentation will describe the FDA policy banning men who have ever had sex with another man since 1977 from donating blood, including its history and its comparison to other limitations on donation, recent challenges to the FDA ban on donation (including the FDA's reconsideration of its policy in 2010), and the competing public health claims - the need for blood vs. the safety of the blood supply - that have animated recent debates about the FDA ban.
