Timothy K. Kuhner

Timothy K. Kuhner teaches courses on international law, comparative law, human rights, campaign finance, and alternative dispute resolution. Prior to joining Georgia State, he worked for three years as Associate Professor of Anglo-American Law at la Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. He has served as a visiting assistant professor at Duke University School of Law and a visiting lecturer at the Catholic University of Portugal.

His professional background also includes clerking on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, conducting field research on conflict resolution in Argentina, Ecuador and Costa Rica as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, working in an international negotiation firm, and most recently, being approved as a court-connected mediator and mediation trainer by the Supreme Court of Georgia's Commission on Dispute Resolution. 

Professor Kuhner's scholarship explores the changing nature of liberal democracy—in particular, how questions of money in politics affect political equality, popular participation, political representation, and the relationship between the market and the state. In a book forthcoming with Stanford University Press and articles in legal journals based at Harvard, University of California at Berkeley, the University of Virginia and Indiana University, he addresses campaign finance reform from the standpoints of constitutional law, democratic and economic theory, comparative law and international law. He has also written articles on the topics of globalization, human rights treaties, the war on terrorism, international criminal law and court-connected mediation.

Professor Kuhner's scholarship has been cited in the Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, Duke Law Journal, NYU Law Review, and the American Journal of Comparative Law, among other leading journals. His work has also been widely cited in international law journals, including those based at Stanford University, Harvard University, Emory University and the University of Michigan.

Professor Kuhner received his J.D. and LL.M., magna cum laude, from Duke University School of Law in 2004. He graduated in the top 10% of his class and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He received his A.B., magna cum laude, from Bowdoin College where he was awarded highest honors in sociology and the Romance Languages Prize.
