Bernadette HartfieldAssociate Professor of LawBernadette Hartfield teaches family law, juvenile law, juvenile justice, and education law. Her research interests include interstate adoption, extended family relationships, and race in legal education. Her publications have addressed the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children, jurisdiction in interstate adoption, grandparent visitation, race and gender in academic recruitment and hiring, the law's differential treatment of anger based on race and gender, and race in criminal law. Professor Hartfield received her B.A. magna cum laude from Spelman College and her J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, where she was editor-in-chief of the Black Law Journal. She is a member of the California Bar on inactive status. She practiced law with Crosby, Heafey, Roach and May and the Legal Aid Society of Alameda County before becoming director of the Legal Education Opportunity Program at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. In that position, she designed and administered academic support programs, including a program for bar preparation. She has taught as an adjunct professor at Hastings, the University of San Francisco, and Spelman College. Professor Hartfield has provided leadership to professional and community organizations that promote the welfare of children and families and that seek to extend educational opportunity to underserved groups. |
