George J. Carey

Professor of Law

Professor Carey received his B.A. in 1965 from the University of Houston, his J.D. from Catholic University in 1969, where he was an editor of the Catholic University Law Review, and his LL.M. in 1974 from Harvard University, where he was research assistant to Professor Stanley Surrey. From 1969 to 1972 he practiced with the Legislation and Regulations Division of the Office of the Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service where he drafted income tax regulations and amendments to the Internal Revenue Code, including work on the 1969 and 1971 Acts.

Professor Carey has taught at The University of Alabama, The University of Dayton, North Carolina Central University, The University of North Carolina (adjunct), Saint Louis University, The University of San Diego (summer), and since 1983 at Georgia State University. At Georgia State he has served as Professor of Law and as Interim Associate Dean. He teaches Basic Tax, Estate & Gift Tax, Business Tax, Taxation of International Transactions, and Accounting for Lawyers. He has published several articles on a rangle of tax topics, including taxation of international transactions and tax aspects of divorce. His current research interest is the structure of the Internal Revenue Code and its policy implications.
