Campus Conflict Management (CM) LiaisonsThe Campus Liaison provides the "communication bridge" both within their institution and between their institution and outside contacts. Each President is asked to appoint a Liaison who has an excellent grasp of institutional culture and the leadership skills to facilitate a committee of diverse constituents on campus, the Campus Conflict Resolution Committee (CCRC). Individuals who express an interest in improving CM on their campus and hold a position of influence that enables them to promote the Initiative are good candidates for this role. Campus Liaisons play a critical role in cultivating the CCRC as a community of practice. It is through their attention, organization, and nurturing that the CCRC moves away from the structure of a committee or task force toward the evolution of a community that creates, expands, and exchanges knowledge about conflict prevention and conflict resolution. Only by making this transformation does the CCRC develop the individual capabilities of its members and its constituents. Several elements are necessary for the CCRC to perform as a community of practice. First, the CCRC must develop a shared understanding of its task, issues, and overall scope. Secondly, creating community is achieved by defining the roles and responsibilities of the members, establishing groundrules, and developing relationships. Over time, members generate energy and develop trust through collaborative problem solving and strategic planning for the development and implementation of CM. Finally, it is through the sustained interactions of the CCRC that the committee or community can become a knowledge resource and repository for CM on their campus. Campus Liaisons are important to capacity building and institutionalization of CM both on their campus and system-wide. Their passion, commitment, and long hours of service are key factors to the success of the Initiative.
