Valdosta State University is a regional university located on 169 acres of land near the heart of Valdosta. The campus features beautifully preserved Spanish Mission architecture and is a standout in this moderately sized city with the friendliness of a small town and the conveniences and cultural attributes of a metropolitan area. The university serves students in the heart of South Georgia with a comprehensive curriculum.

More than 10,400 undergraduate and graduate students attend Valdosta State University from almost every county in Georgia, 44 states and 68 countries. The size of the student body enables the university to offer students a close relationship with their professors in classes with a student to professor ratio of 20 to 1.

Five colleges -- Arts, Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education and Nursing -- as well as a graduate division offer 53 undergraduate majors, 11 master's degrees (23 majors), 10 education specialist majors and a doctorate in education with three majors. Nationally accredited programs include art, business, education, nursing, sports medicine and speech pathology.

Valdosta State University is an innovator in the use of technology to enhance instruction. The Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration offers a collaborative WebMBA program with four other Georgia universities. A web-based MPA program, in addition to an on-campus program, is offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. The university affords opportunities for distance learning at off-campus locations throughout its South Georgia region, including Kings Bay Naval Base on the east coast of Georgia and Moody Air Force Base in Lowndes County.

Students can participate in 145 recognized student organizations, offering a wide variety of programs and activities. The university also boasts a championship NCAA Division II athletic program. The "Blazers" compete in a total of nine men's and women's intercollegiate sports.

Founded in 1906, the institution was named the South Georgia State Normal College for young ladies in 1914. In 1922, a legislative act changed the name to Georgia State Woman's College and authorized a four-year program leading to the bachelor's degree. The Board of Regents made the College co-educational in 1950, changing the name to Valdosta State College. VSC became Valdosta State University in 1993.
