Designing Conflict Resolution on Campuses

This site is intended with an admittedly utopian goal in mind – that ultimately, conflict will be resolved with no third-party intervention.  Two or more people who find themselves in a dispute will have the tools, will and confidence needed to resolve the problem amongst their selves and not need any further assistance.  But we fully acknowledge that this is a lofty goal which may be practically unattainable in our current society.  Here we attempt to ensure that fallback measures are in place if and when third-party intervention is required.

Another concept that we humbly ask while you read this document is to keep your mind open to other possible solutions.  There is no document in the world that can consider every detail of a particular conflict and every situation is unique.  We ask you to emphasize the alternative aspect of alternative dispute resolution.  What we set forth here are ideas that have been implemented at various institutions in our experience, but your institution or program should have a system that is tailored to the needs and culture of your stakeholders’ uniqueness.
