CNCR's Summer Institute offers classes focusing on learning and improving conflict management skills in the context of a university setting. Our faculty apply their extensive knowledge and their own unique experience as administrators and faculty to the interactive, participatory workshops.

Carolyn Benne, an independent conflict management and resolution consultant, is currently contracted with the Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution to design, build and implement a regional restorative justice clearinghouse. Prior to becoming an independent consultant, Carolyn was a Director of CNCR. As Director, she led CNCR's Conflict Resolution in Schools Program, a living laboratory examining the efficacy of teaching conflict management skills to children in the Atlanta Public Schools. Carolyn is an experienced mediator, facilitator and trainer. She has facilitated group problem solving and community building sessions in the higher education, private business, and community arenas; conducted training in conflict management including mediation; designed conflict management systems in higher education and the private sector; and, evaluated conflict management systems. |

Ross Brinkert is an Assistant Professor of Corporate Communication at Penn State University- Abington. He has more than 10 years of experience as a conflict management professional in for-profit and not-for-profit settings. He helped pioneer conflict coaching while completing graduate studies and co-leading the CERT program at Temple University from 1998-2001. More recently, Dr. Brinkert introduced the first comprehensive model of conflict coaching in Conflict Resolution Quarterly and co-authored the book Conflict Coaching: Conflict Management Strategies and Skills for the Individual. He is currently completing a research project that documents the introduction of conflict coaching in a large organization. |

Linda Bryant, Director of Organizational and Staff Development at Georgia State University, has served in numerous roles as facilitator, course instructor and consultant. Linda, a certified instructor in strategic change, has over fifteen years experience in training and development in state government and academic settings. Prior to coming to Georgia State, Linda was the manager of training for Arizona State University. She has developed curricula, supervised trainers, and written numerous training manuals for management and staff development programs. |

Michael Elliott is an Associate Professor of City Planning and Environmental Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His specialties include public policy dispute resolution and environmental management. He currently serves as an Executive Committee member for CNCR. His work focuses on mediation of complex multi-party disputes, and on the evaluation and design of more effective systems for resolving public policy disputes. He is a member of the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution, the Society for Risk Analysis, the National Association of Environmental Professionals, the International Association of Conflict Management and the American Planning Association. |

Wendy Garrard is a CNCR research fellow who recently earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and previously graduated from Loyala University Chicago with a Masters of Applied Social Psychology. Dorothy Graham has served as Kennesaw State University’s Ombudsperson since 1996. She is a trained mediator and has extensive training in conflict management and ombuds work. She is also KSU’s Liaison to the state-wide consortium (CNCR) that monitors dispute resolution throughout the University System of Georgia. Dorothy is a member of the International Ombudsman Association and has formerly served on its board and that of the University and College Ombuds Association. |

Timothy Hedeen is an Associate Professor of Conflict Management at Kennesaw State University, and serves as visiting faculty at Hamline University School of Law’s Dispute Resolution Institute. He serves on the editorial board of Conflict Resolution Quarterly and on the Section Council of the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution. He mediates through court, campus and private programs, delivers trainings in the areas of conflict resolution and communication, facilitates group and public policy decision making and strategic planning, and conducts research and evaluation on dispute resolution. |

Tricia Jones is a Professor in the Department of Psychological Studies in the College of Education, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. Her teaching and research interests are in interpersonal, group and organizational conflict processes with special emphasis on conflict resolution education and social and emotional learning programs in K-16 institutions. She has published over 40 articles and book chapters on conflict and conflict resolution education, and co-edited the volumes, New Directions on Mediation (Sage, 1994) and Does It Work? The Case for Conflict Resolution Education in our Nations Schools (CRENet, 2000), and Kids Working It Out: Stories and Strategies for Making Peace in Our Schools (Jossey-Bass, 2003). She has authored the book, Interpersonal Communication through the Life Span published by Houghton-Mifflin in 2006. Marilyn Hazzard Lineberger, a Licensed Psychologist, is President of Lineberger Consulting Services, Director of the University Counseling Center at Clark Atlanta University, Senior Program Consultant for the Emory Employee Assistance Program and adjunct faculty at Emory University. She holds leadership positions in several professional and civic organizations and has provided extensive consulting and training services both nationally and internationally. Dr. Lineberger specializes in areas related to human relations, clinical psychology, employee assistance programs and organizational behavior. She is an experienced mediator and facilitator in small and large group conflict. |

Leigh Anne Liu, Assistant Professor of International Business at the Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University. Terry Norris earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Oklahoma State University and came to Columbus State University in 1976 as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice. Over the years he became increasingly involved in campus grievance proceedings chairing both the Faculty Grievance Committee and the Student Rights and Responsibilities Committee. For more than a decade, Terry has regularly attended the Law and Higher Education conferences at the University of Vermont and Steton University’s College of Law. He has also received extensive training as a mediator. Currently, Terry is the Associate VP for Academic Affairs, Director of Judicial Affairs & SACS Liaison. One of his special interests is the integration of interest-based approaches with a rights-based process, such as grievance proceedings. |

Maggie McHugh-Parrish, President of GoalModels, Inc., provides service as a mediator and facilitator. Maggie worked in the University System of Georgia System for eight years, first as Director of University Housing at Georgia State University and then later as Director of Information Technology at Southern Polytechnic. She has mediated academic and community disputes, as well as civil, criminal and family court cases. She served on the Board of Directors of the Community Dispute Resolution Center, was a co-founder and board member of the Peer Mediation Center at Syracuse University and established and co-chaired the first annual National Campus Mediation Conference. Maggie has provided conflict resolution training/consultation to national and international audiences and has worked for such clients as the Department of Higher Education, New Jersey, colleges/universities in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. |

Rachel Schipper has worked for over 24 years in higher education. Starting a Penn State, and continuing at Johns Hopkins, Florida Tech, Shepherd University, and Georgia College & State University, she co-chaired the Conflict Resolution Committee at GCSU, instructed graduate students and faculty in mediation, and designed the committee’s web site(http://www.gcsu.edu/conflictresolution/index.htm). Creating Communities of Practice is a large part of Dr. Schipper’s current position as Associate Dean for Technology and Support Services at the University of Florida. Rachel assists in reorganization and builds collaboration between a variety of entities. Her interests include coaching, mentoring, fiber arts and food. She knows that chocolate is a key ingredient to building rapport in a successful community. |

Peter J. Shedd is a Professor of Legal Studies in the Terry College of Business and the Interim Vice President for Instruction and Association Provost at the University of Georgia. He has served as the President of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business and was named the State of Georgia’s Professor of the Year in 1999 by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Peter also serves as a mediator for the University of Georgia and is a member of the American Arbitration Association, the Advisory Committee on the Use of ADR in Employment Disputes, and the University of Georgia Alternative Dispute Resolution Taskforce. |

Bill Warters is an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Communication at Wayne State University where he teaches in WSU's Master of Arts in Dispute Resolution. He is Director of the FIPSE-funded Conflict Management in Higher Education Clearinghouse also known as Campus-adr.org and Faculty Fellow for Wayne State University's Office for Teaching and Learning. He is the author of the book Mediation in the Campus Community: Designing and Managing Effective Programs published by Jossey-Bass Press. His extensive background in campus conflict management includes serving in 1990 as co-chair of the First National Conference on Campus Mediation Programs and then Chair of the National Association for Mediation in Education's Committee on Higher Education, then as a Board Member of CRENet and then as Co-Chair of the Association for Conflict Resolution's Education Section. He has helped found dozens of campus mediation programs, either by providing the initial mediation training, or by providing various forms of technical assistance. |
