Juris Doctor and Master of Science in Health Administration
Credit Hour Requirements
The College of Law requires that all JD candidates earn 90 credits hours, 43 of which are filled by taking required courses and 47 of which are filled by taking elective courses. For students enrolled in the JD / MSHA program, the College of Law will accept as course credit 12 semester hours of 8000 level MSHA courses. Students must earn a grade of B or better to receive law credit for their MSHA course work.
The Robinson College of Business requires that all MSHA candidates earn 36 credit hours, 24 of which are filled by taking required courses and 12 of which are filled by taking courses in a concentration. For students enrolled in the JD / MSHA program, the College of Business will accept as course credit 15 semester hours of elective law courses from the JD curriculum: twelve hours will be given for any law elective courses and 3 credit hours will be given for LAW 7239 Health Law: Liability or LAW 7240 Health Law: Regulation in place of HA 8450 Legal Environment of Health care. Students must earn a grade of 80 (which is the equivalent of a B) to receive College of Business credit for their College of Law course work.
Admissions and Timing of Entry into the Joint Program
Candidates for the joint program must meet the admissions requirements and follow the application procedures of both the College of Law and the College of Business (including the Institute of Health Administration). Admission into one college will create no presumption favoring admission to the other. To be admitted to the joint program, an applicant must be separately admitted to the JD and the MSHA program and then must request to proceed in the joint program.
Students interested in pursuing the joint program may apply for admission into the College of Law and the College of Business simultaneously but they are not required to do so. Neither College will permit students to enroll in the joint program after a student has earned either a JD from the College of Law or a MSHA or MBA / MHA from the College of Business. In addition, the College of Law will not permit students to enroll in the joint program after a student has completed 21 semester hours of 8000 level MSHA course work.
Sequencing of Course Work
Students who have been admitted to the JD and MSHA programs and intend to pursue the joint degree must at their first opportunity complete the first 31 semester hours of required courses in the JD program. After the completion of these 31 hours of law courses, course enrollment in either college or both concurrently is permitted.
Law Courses that Will Count Towards the MSHA Degree
Students can apply 12 hours of law electives towards their MSHA degree and its 12 hour concentration requirement. Students will receive advice as to which law courses can best satisfy this concentration requirement and complement their joint interest in law and health administration.
In addition to earning MSHA credit for 12 hours of law courses, students will be able to earn 3 hours of MSHA credit for taking either LAW 7239 Health Law: Liability or LAW 7240 Health Law: Regulation in lieu of HA 8450 Legal Environment of Health Care.
MSHA Courses that Will Count Towards the JD Degree
Students can apply 12 hours of 8000 level MSHA course work towards their JD degree.
Awarding of Degrees
No credit hours for MSHA or course work will be applied toward the JD degree requirements until completion of the MSHA degree requirements. Students can satisfy this requirement by completing both JD and MSHA requirements simultaneously or by completing the degree requirements for the MSHA first. Similarly, no credit hours of JD course work will be applied toward MSHA degree requirements until the completion of JD degree requirements. Students can satisfy this requirement by completing JD and MSHA degree requirements simultaneously or by completing the requirements for the JD first.
