Project Description 

Award was made to the College of Law and Robinson College of Business to fund three new faculty lines under the University's Second Century Initiative around the research theme of the legal and ethical governance of businesses in health care, life sciences, and biotechnology markets.

Two of these faculty lines are appointed in the College of Law: (1) intellectual property law with a research focus on biotechnology, the life and health sciences, and entrepreneurship; and (2) health law with a research focus on health law regulations, corporate law and compliance, and ethics of health care businesses and organizations. 

Building Capacity in Health Justice Research: A Collaborative Research Effort to Reduce Health Disparities

Project Description 

Award was made to the College of Law and the Institute of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Sciences to fund three new faculty lines under the University's Second Century Initiative around the research theme of achieving health justice through improving health equity and reducing health disparities.

One of these faculty lines is appointed in the College of Law, to support a faculty member who specializes in a legal discipline consistent with a research focus on achieving health equity and reducing health disparities. 

HeLP Legal Services Clinic

Project Description 

This grant supports a Clinical Supervising Attorney for the HeLP Legal Services Clinic and a portion of the costs of a graduate research assistant and Health Services Research Consultant for two years.

The Clinical Supervising Attorney expands the delivery of public health legal services to address the full spectrum of socio-economic and environmental factor affecting low-income children's health, permits increased student enrollment in the HeLP Legal Services Clinic, and promotes the interdisciplinary education of health care and legal professionals to work as a team to improve the health of children, especially those from under-served and vulnerable communities. 

Assessing the Use and Understanding of Certificates of Confidentiality

Project Description  This study will examine how research institutions understand and use Certificates of Confidentiality in protecting research participants and the role they play in assessments of risk. The study includes interviews of Institutional Review Board (IRB) Chairs and institutional counsel and a survey of IRB Chairs. 
 

Ethically Contentious Research and Innovation: An Interdisciplinary and Inter-institutional Experiment in Ethics Education and Assessment

Project Description  This project tests an experimental approach to ethics education for graduate students in science and engineering. The project enrolls interdisciplinary teams of graduate and professional students - drawn from science, engineering, law, medicine, public policy, and the humanities at four institutions - in the study of ethically contentious policy problems. The experimental course employs problem based learning. Students present results of their investigation of the problems and their policy recommendations to relevant policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.

Project Description The Online Ethics Center portion of this project enlists an interdisciplinary team from three institutions in the study of ethical dilemmas in the conduct of scientific research. The team anonymizes actual dilemmas experienced by graduate science students or submitted by researchers and co-authors expert opinions posted to the Web at: http://www.atlantactsi.org/areas/erks/ethics/index.html. Team members also present at seminars and conferences on research ethics.

Georgia Department of Community Health  Health Disparities in Low-Income Children  $99,974.60  October 2008-June 2010: Under the Georgia Health Equity Initiative of 2008, this grant supported the expansion of the Health Law Partnership (HeLP) to Hughes Spalding Hospital of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The grant was used to hire an attorney Fellow at the College of Law, educational programming on cultural competency in health care at the hospital, and HeLP program evaluation.
