Consider the following tips when starting your class and exam preparation

  • Time Management: Time management is the key! Make sure you get a great organizer (either electronic or old-school paper) to keep up with your various activities whether it's class, study group, lunch-n-learns, or personal down time!
  • Note Taking: Decide whether you are interested in handwriting or typing your notes in class.  It may be helpful to try a class both ways and decide from there.  Either way, notes will be the bulk of your exam study aids...make sure you get great notes!
    • Some professors require that you handwrite notes!
    • If you handwrite notes, think about setting time aside to digest your notes and type the most important concepts into your outline skeleton.
    • Brief every case!
    • Begin with a full case brief and later in the semester (especially during exam crunch time), consider abbreviated briefs, depending on how well you know the material
    • "Just Say No" to canned briefs; learning the art of briefing is essential to your legal career
  • Supplements: Supplements are plain English overviews of the law that you may not pick up on in your casebook.  Supplements are the most effective when you read them along the way, versus at the end of the semester! Keep in mind for those students that are cash-strapped, the library has a reserve copy of most frequently used supplements.  The following supplements have been found useful for each applicable class:
    • Property- Understanding Property Law; Student's Guide to Estates & Future Interests; Future Interests Flash Cards
    • Torts- Examples and Explanations- especially the exam writing appendices
    • Civil Procedure- Examples and Explanations; Flash Cards
    • Contracts- Gilberts
  • Outlining: Make your own outline!  However, it may be helpful to use either a commercial outline or outline from a 2L/3L for guidance.  Consider whether it is better for you to outline along the way versus outlining at the end of the semester.  It is generally more helpful not to commit to an outline format on the first day, however, as the majority of your first classes will be introductory material.
  • Exams and Exam Prep: Take practice exams!  Additionally, ask your professors for last term's "best answers" and attempt to learn from those answers.  Try the following resources for sample exams/answers
  • Study Groups: Study groups are often useful to review information discussed in class and for sharing class notes. Decide if you want one or not based on your grasp of the material.  You should attempt to make this determination early on. Consider that law school exams demand that you be able to identify and analyze various perspectives on issues—working with peers in productive groups can help present those perspectives in an efficient way.

  • Create a resume ASAP!
    • Submit your resume to the Career Services Office (“CSO”) for review and revision.

  • Pay attention to emails for relevant hard-and-fast deadlines from CSO and other 1L Listserv emails regarding potential availability.
  • Stay in close contact with the Career Services Office for ongoing job postings and summer position availability
  • Attend the Public Interest Job Fair
