25th Anniversary

It’s Time To Celebrate Our Story

With a deep sense of pride and achievement, the Georgia State University College of Law is commemorating its 25th Anniversary during the 2007-08 academic year, a year focused on the celebration of our story and our future. I hope that you share our excitement in reaching this milestone, which will be marked by lectures, conferences and reunion events, as well as a student and faculty pro bono initiative targeted to the Atlanta community.

The Georgia State University College of Law holds a unique place on the roster of American law schools. Its founding was discussed and debated in the mid-1970s among Georgia’s governors, legislators and academic leaders. Supporters of the college worked relentlessly for nearly a decade, and the first students walked through the doors in 1982. How the college was born tells much about its personality today – tough and determined, passionate and public, talented and accessible.

Our college – your college – is indeed a special place.

Do you remember how special? Take a look at this brief video (dial-up version), and I bet it will all come back to you.

Continue to look through this site to find great anniversary events, offering both intellectual engagement and social interaction. From the groundbreaking international Conference on the Future of Legal Education to a keynote visit from the Honorable Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, our calendar is packed with important learning and professional development symposia, along with a 25th Anniversary commitment of 25,000 pro bono hours of public service for our community neighbors. And yes, we will have a party or two, culminating with a very special 25th Anniversary Gala Celebration at the Atlanta History Center.

The Georgia State University College of Law has made substantial differences in the lives of its students, its faculty and its hometown. The first 25 years have been challenging, as noted by Jim Eastham (Class of ’85): “We were taking a risk… We didn't know what to expect. Really, we had the old pioneering spirit.”

Nothing more accurate could be said about our college.

Steven KaminshineWelcome to the next 25 years of the Georgia State University College of Law. I look forward to celebrating with all of you.
