Course Description

Capital Punishment Law. This course will examine various legal and policy issues surrounding the death penalty, including racial discrimination, the right to effective counsel, limitations on executing the mentally retarded and juveniles, and the use of "victim impact" evidence. It will emphasize the relationship between Supreme Court doctrine and real-world practice in state courts in the South.

The assignment for our first class will be Assignment 1 on the syllabus:

Assignment 1          Introduction (Jan. 16)

            i.     Powell v. Alabama

           ii.     McGautha v. California

  1. For our first class: (IF POSSIBLE, PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE DOING THE ASSIGNED READING) Write down 1-2 paragraphs explaining why you support or do not support the death penalty.  You need not (and should not) do any outside research for this assignment.  Your paragraphs should be submitted to my faculty inbox (on the 4th floor) or emailed to me by no later than 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16.
