Biotechnology Law, Policy and Ethics. (2-3 credits) This course provides an introduction to the legal, policy, and ethical issues surrounding biotechnologies. The course surveys a variety of federal and state laws and international treaties addressing biotechnology research, patenting, and applications. The course will examine the distinctive legal, policy, and ethical issues associated with biotechnologies in selected topic areas, which may include genetically modified foods, nanotechnology, xenotransplantation, patenting of genes/patenting of life, stem cell research, gene therapy, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, sex-selection reproductive technologies, germline genetic engineering of human beings, and human reproductive cloning.
