Celebrating Newly Minted Lawyers

Georgia State University College of Law alumni were sworn into the Georgia Bar, the Court of Appeals of Georgia and the Supreme Court of Georgia in a ceremony Friday morning with an audience of faculty, family and friends in the Georgia State University Student Center Ballroom.

Eighty newly minted lawyers participated, while more than 70 including some alumni stood for admission to the two courts. Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Presiding Judge Sara Doyle administered the oaths for the state appeals court and supreme court.

Judge C.J. Becker (J.D. ’87) of the Superior Court of Georgia for the Stone Mountain District administered the oath for the Georgia Bar. She urged new lawyers to use their skill set to spot problems and peel apart issues in an analytical fashion.

“Seek out mentors who you admire,” Becker said. “Our society needs those with your skill set so I challenge you to use them for the betterment of society.”

Law Alumni Council member John Weitnauer (J.D. ’12) called the breakfast an honor to celebrate with the esteemed jurists and family members.

“It’s completion,” says Ashley O’Daniel (J.D. ’12). “We’ve come full circle. We celebrated graduation, but we had the bar exam. We celebrated finishing the bar but we had to wait for the results. This means we are done.”

Law Alumni Council member Jeff Connelly (J.D. ’12), agreed saying, “our class couldn’t be more happy to have gone through this long journey together.”

Distinguished guests included the presiding justices and judges, as well as Sally Lockwood, director of the Bar Admissions office, and Board of Bar Examiners Susan Cox, Gregory Fullerton, John Sammon, Ralph Simpson and Anita Wallace Thomas.

“It is always a pleasure to host this event for our alumni, and welcome them officially into the legal community – whether they are expanding their careers or being admitted for the first time,” Dean Steven J. Kaminshine said.

Georgia State Law hosts a swearing-in event in November each year.
